Cruel Optimism

The blatant allusion to the glass ceiling serves to mirror the queer experience of cruel optimism. Precariously stacked, straining, and stretching with no certainty of success, the collective of individuals - a community bound by shared experiences - persist to bolster one another. The transparency of the glass figures echoes the historical erasure of queer identities and narratives. Whereas the transparency of the surrounding chains and barriers draw reference to the invisible barriers of systemic limitations and discriminatory biases which hinder true equality. The work questions if there is an optimism for queer folk that isn’t cruel, and if we can find it within the spaces and communities we have built.
